Pre-Purchase Survey
A pre-purchase survey is an essential step when considering buying a boat. The main purpose of this survey is to assess the structural condition of the craft, while all other areas are inspected on a non-intrusive visual basis only unless additional checks are specifically agreed upon.
The survey involves a thorough inspection of the vessel’s interior and exterior focusing on its structural integrity and the general condition of key systems and components including safety equipment. This survey requires the vessel to be out of the water.
A pre-purchase survey gives you an unbiased, independent, professional assessment of the vessel’s condition – helping buyers to make informed decisions before purchasing, avoid costly repairs or unexpected issues after the purchase, can be used to negotiate a fair price and provides valuable peace of mind.
If purchasing a Sailing Vessel our recommendations are:
- Obtain a pre-purchase mechanical inspection by a Qualified Marine Mechanic. Under a Pre-Purchase/Pre-Sale Survey the mechanical inspection is visual only.
- Obtain a full mast and rigging survey. Under a Pre-Purchase/Pre-Sale Survey the mast and rigging is a visual inspection from deck height only (1.5m).
If purchasing a Motor Vessel our recommendations are:
- Obtain a pre-purchase mechanical inspection by a Qualified Marine Mechanic. Under a Pre-Purchase/Pre-Sale Survey the mechanical inspection is visual only.
Pre-Sale Survey
A pre-sale survey is essentially the same as a pre-purchase survey, a thorough inspection to assess the condition of a vessel before it is put up for sale, to identify any potential issues and defects.
Typically the seller or broker commissions the survey to address potential concerns and provide transparency to prospective buyers.
This survey requires the vessel to be out of the water.
